Eclectic decorating: How to design an eclectic living room

by Eddie Brissett 08/05/2024

When decorating your house, it's best to go room by room. While having a general design style for the entire home is an excellent way to begin, highlighting each room's specific features and design can take your decor to the next level. Here are some room-by-room tips for decorating your house:

Living room

Living rooms are multi-functional spaces with a variety of options for decor. They are typically places for people to gather, socialize, play and enjoy media. To get started designing your living room, think about what you want to be the focal point of the room. You will also want to arrange your furniture to create conversation points while also drawing attention to a focal point like a fireplace or media center.

Bedrooms

Bedroom design matters more than you might think. Though you spend most of your time sleeping, the choices you make in decor can have a big impact on your comfort level. Choice of color is particularly important in bedrooms. Choose light, neutral colors to create a sense of freshness and rejuvenation. Vibrant or dark colors can add luxury, coziness and a personal flair.

Bathrooms

Many design ideas for bathrooms trend toward making the room relaxing and luxurious. Others prefer a clean and simple approach. Whatever your preference, focus on the basics before getting down to the details. Some specific things to think about when designing a bathroom are your choice of sink and vanity, the style of shower or tub and any storage or functional features you might need.

Kitchen & dining room

Kitchens are often considered the heart of the home, both for comfort and function. Kitchen design should prioritize use of space and functionality while still following your personal style ideas. If you're decorating a pre-built kitchen rather than remodeling one, focus on light fixtures, paint colors and cabinetry as part of your design scheme.

Every home is different, as is every homeowner. No matter your preferences, keeping these tips in mind will help you design every room of your home.
